A festival that is not just about films
100,000 VIEWERS: The One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, organised by the People in Need foundation, is currently the world’s biggest documentary festival with a human rights theme.
ONE WORLD IN THE REGIONS: The festival does not only take place in the capital; after screenings in Prague, it moves on to 40 other Bohemian and Moravian cities and towns.
DISCUSSIONS AND DEBATES: One World provides a platform for the exchange of views and experiences; viewers have the opportunity to discuss the subjects of films with their makers, as well as with experts on the issue in question.
THE FESTIVAL IN THE CLASSROOM: Screenings for primary and secondary schools are held during One World. In addition, the festival works with universities through the project History, Film and Human Rights, aimed at establishing seminars on human rights as part of the education provided at Czech third-level institutions.
HOMO HOMINI: The only Czech international human rights award is presented within the framework of the festival. Bestowed annually on an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to the promotion of human rights, it provides recipients and their associates with moral support and increased attention from the international community.
INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM: This year for the first time during One World, the Institute of Documentary Film is organising an East Doc Platform intended for film professionals. Over several jam-packed days, filmmakers from Eastern and Central Europe will meet leading European and North American television producers, buyers and other key players in the film industry.
ONE WORLD IN THE WORLD: The festival long ago transcended the borders of the Czech Republic, and human rights festivals today take place around the world. This year they are joined by a new festival of documentary films in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad Eye. Meanwhile, One World in Brussels, which takes place at the European Parliament, is being held for the sixth time.
RIGHT TO KNOW: Things certainly don’t come to an end when the festival is over. The One World team in Prague organises regular film debate evenings throughout the year. Through screenings and panel discussions, the public has the opportunity to learn about the broader context of local and international human rights issues, which are frequently overlooked by the Czech media.
GET YOUR AUDIENCE! Fans of One World’s films have the opportunity to get involved in the alternative distribution of films. Since 2010, they have been able to borrow documentaries free of charge and screen them to their own audiences. Over 900 people have become involved, putting on screenings that have drawn over 30,000 viewers. http://f.cl.ly/items/422U463OD2m2K0t2f1O/newsletter2_en.html
